Living Near a Busy Road: How to Think About Home Ventilation
Aira by PFCShare
You want fresh air in the living room, but the window faces a busy road. One day opening it seems sensible; another day the surroundings make you hesitate. A useful answer starts with local information, not a universal timetable for every home.
Look outside before opening up
The EPA advises evaluating ventilation when outdoor pollution sources are nearby. Outdoor air may dilute indoor pollutants, but its condition matters too. Filtration and ventilation have different roles.
Prepare three questions for your building
- How is air renewed? Ask management or the building’s technical contact what system exists and how it should be used.
- What local information is available? Look for official air-quality notices relevant to your area and date. Check where and when a reading was taken; a distant reading does not automatically describe your street.
- Is there a specific source to review? Describe construction, smoke or other observations without treating them as measurements.
If local data is unavailable, record that limitation. An appealing number in an app does not replace knowing where its information comes from.
A routine needs context
Keep building guidance alongside your observations. Do not choose a fixed time simply because someone follows it in another neighbourhood. Equally, do not assume keeping everything permanently closed resolves ventilation needs.
A useful question might be: “Our living room faces this road and uses this system. What guidance applies to this apartment?”. If concerns persist, discuss the situation with a building professional.
Filtration as part of the plan
PFC Air is being developed to bring filtration options to homes and offices. The model, capacity and limitations are still to be confirmed; we do not present a purifier as a complete solution to urban air pollution.
