All-in-One Water Systems: What They Can Reduce and How to Compare Their Stages

All-in-one systems promise to address several filtration needs with one unit. The idea is appealing, but comparing these systems requires looking beyond the advertised number of stages.

What an all-in-one system usually includes

These systems combine several filtration stages in one unit: sediment prefilters, activated carbon, sometimes a reverse osmosis membrane, and occasionally a remineralization or final polishing cartridge.

Each stage has a different role. The total number of stages alone does not show how well the complete system performs. Source: EPA

Why “10 stages” is not a performance measure

It is common for equipment to advertise a high stage count as a selling point. Yet two identical filters in series do not necessarily represent two different capabilities: they may repeat the same function.

Ask specifically what each stage does, not just how many there are.

A useful comparison looks at certification of the complete unit’s final performance rather than simply adding up its separate components.

Certifications to look for

Relevant NSF standards vary by system type: NSF/ANSI 42 addresses aesthetic effects such as chlorine and taste, NSF/ANSI 53 addresses health-related effects such as lead reduction, and NSF/ANSI 58 applies to reverse osmosis systems. Source: NSF

Verify that certification applies to the exact model you are buying and the performance claim you care about, not merely the brand or product line.

Questions for comparing all-in-one equipment

  • Which certifications apply to the complete system, rather than just a component?
  • Which stages overlap, and which serve different functions?
  • What maintenance does each cartridge need, and how often?
  • How easy will it be to obtain genuine replacements over time?
  • Does the system need electricity, a minimum pressure, or special installation?

Clear answers to these questions are more useful than a long list of stages without context.

Simplicity supported by information

An all-in-one system may be a good choice if it simplifies installation and addresses your specific needs. Choose it for what it is demonstrated to do, not for how many filters are in the box.

At PFC, we help you understand what each stage of our systems does and what maintenance it needs over time.
