Reverse Osmosis Maintenance: What to Care for Beyond Replacing Filters
Share
Buying a reverse osmosis system is only the first step. Keeping it working correctly requires more attention than changing cartridges when you remember.
Why maintenance means more than “changing filters”
A reverse osmosis system has several components that work together: prefilters, the membrane, sometimes a remineralization cartridge, a storage tank if included, and the unit’s connections.
Each component has its own service life and care requirements. Focusing only on cartridges overlooks important aspects of system operation. Source: EPA
The replacement schedule matters
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for replacing each prefilter and the membrane. Timing may vary with use, incoming-water quality, and system design.
Do not assume that every component lasts equally long. Depending on your water, a sediment prefilter may need replacing more often than the membrane.
Record each cartridge’s installation date so you can keep track.
The tank needs attention too
If your system includes a pressurized storage tank, check its air pressure periodically as directed by the manufacturer. Incorrect pressure can affect the amount of available water and overall operation.
Signs that something needs checking
- Noticeable changes in treated water’s taste, odor, or appearance.
- Reduced flow or pressure at the faucet.
- Unusual noises during operation.
- Visible leaks around connections or cartridges.
If you notice any of these signs, consult the system manual and contact the supplier before attempting modifications yourself.
After a long period without use
If the system has not been used for several weeks, check the manufacturer’s recommendations before using it again. Some systems require flushing stored water or checking cartridge condition after prolonged inactivity.
Planned care rather than reactive care
Regular maintenance helps protect your investment and keep the system operating as intended. A simple record of replacements and inspections makes this easier.
